2nd place in the XS 52 Super Series Newport RI Trophy, 1st place in Class in the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta

Newport RI. The Gladiators consolidated their podium position on the final day of racing in the XS 52 Super Series Newport RI Trophy on Sunday, moving up from 3rd to 2nd position and closing the gap on Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic in the overall standings.

By Race 5 on Thursday the Langley team were back in 7th position in the 10 boat fleet but a bullet in Race 6 propelled them to third place on count back with three other boats by the end of the day.

There was a lay day on Friday and the Gladiators joined the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta for the Round the Island Race, a 30 mile lap of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay.

There was no racing on Saturday due lack of wind and on the final day of racing on Sunday, a light sea breeze finally came through in the afternoon.

Team boss Tony Langley, calling tactics this season, chose the pin end to start in Race 7, working the left side of the course but narrowly missed first place to Hahm Müller- Spreer’s Platoon to finish second.

By Race 8 start time the building breeze had shifted right and the Committee Boat end became heavily favoured. Langley positioned to be weather-most boat but was closed out at the Committee Boat by Andy Soriano’s Alegre. However, a tack on the Committee Boat proved to be decisive, despite crossing the line 14 seconds after the gun.

Langley took full advantage of the favoured right side of the course, loosely covering the fleet to round the top mark in first place. From there the Gladiators extended on each of the three remaining legs to finish first, placing them second in the regatta two points behind Vayu and one point ahead of Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic in third place.

The final day’s performance also earned the Gladiators first place in the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta TP52 Class being run concurrently over the weekend.

The Langley team are now second overall in the 52 Super Series standings on 72 points behind Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic on 63 points and ahead of Takashi Okura’s Sled on 75 points in third place.

Next up the 52 Super Series remain in Newport RI for the pinnacle Rolex World Championship, July 15-20 before returning to the Med in August.
