Newport RI. On a day of high drama that began with an eerie New England fog engulfing the ten-strong 52 Super Series fleet and saw Hahm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon wiped out by a collision with whale shark, the Langley Gladiator team climbed into podium position with their first points race win in the XS 52 Super Series Newport RI Trophy.

The Gladiators had a race win in official practice on Monday but were lying 7th at the half way point in the regatta this morning with 8-4-5-8-6 finishes in the first five races.

A perfectly executed bullet in Race 6 propelled the team to third place, the Gladiator leading from start to finish, despite Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic hot on their stern for much of the race.

Tomorrow (Friday) is a lay-day for the visiting 52 Super Series and the start of the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) Annual Regatta. Five of the ten Super Series boats are joining the NYYC Round Conanicut Island Race and the whole fleet continue alongside NYYC racing over the weekend.
