Reigning World Champions claim victory in a performance fit for royalty
Mallorca, Spain – Langley’s Gladiator Sailing Team notched up their second regatta win in a row at Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week, August 28th – September 1st.
Thirteen boats from eight different countries battled for supremacy in the Bay of Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca, Thailand’s Team Vāyu with Her Majesty Queen Suthida racing with the team for the first time.
It was a thrilling final day of racing which started with the Gladiators lying in second place three points behind Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon Aviation.
But the Rolex TP52 World Champions held their nerve, skilfully holding off the German team close on their stern in the final race until disturbed air from following boats forced them to gybe away, opening the door to USA and Turkish boats Interlodge and Provezza.
The final result was tied points for the regatta, the winner decided on count-back. The Gladiators now lead the 2024 season standings by eight points, ahead of the USA’s Quantum Racing Powered by American Magic.
The final regatta of the 2024 season will be held in Valencia, Spain, September 23rd-28th.
The Queen and the Gladiator: Her Majesty Queen Suthida of Thailand presents the winner’s trophy to Gladiator Tactician & Team Boss Tony Langley.
